40 is a video self-portrait by Maija Mustonen — a series of poses, edits, and tentative gestures exploring the act of performing in front of a camera. Through this work, she approaches kindness by reflecting on her relationship with time, her aging body, and feminism, all in dialogue with contemporary dance and art more broadly.
What’s most interesting to me in this process are those seconds on the video which show my body and my choreographic mind trying decisively raise the ordinary into the spotlight, but I end up seeming doubtful, pretentious or just boring and familiar. Maybe I just want to observe all this with kindness, with peace.
