Maija Mustonen is a multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Helsinki, Finland. She works at the intersections of performance art, choreography, and visual arts. Her practice often explores questions of tactility, surrender, nudity, and rest. Mustonen is interested in gentle, long-term practices of support and sharing. Her works emerge through collaboration and often centre on a specific act or practice, taking the form of live installations or participatory performances.

Mustonen has created both individually directed and collaborative works for contemporary dance, performance, and visual arts contexts, as well as site-specific works. Her recent work has been presented at Sequences art festival in Reykjavík, Tallinn Art Hall, and Medūza Gallery in Vilnius; SIC Gallery, Drifts Festival, Takomo Theatre, Outo olo, Kiasma Theatre, and Kunsthalle Helsinki; and Titanik Gallery in Turku. She is currently developing a new work for Gallery Sinne. Earlier in her career, she created several works for Zodiak – Center for New Dance and Ehkä-production’s Kutomo.

She is a founding member of the rendezvous association and space, which she established with her long-time choreographer collaborators. Alongside her artistic practice, Mustonen has worked as a curator for Mad House Helsinki, Ehkä-production, and Love Harvest Festival. Mustonen holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki, where she studied in the Time and Space Arts programme, and a bachelor’s degree in dance and choreography from the Laban Centre, London. She has also studied performance art and theory at the Theatre Academy Helsinki.

Mustonen’s work is supported by a five-year artist grant awarded by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
